A delegation of Senators will be going on a humanitarian mission to
India to help the Tsunami victims; but that's not the only thing on
their agenda. Some of the Senators will be spending time to do some
"bonding" with Indian businessmen.
The return of the Republicans in the Congress is also an
opportunity for India to bond with them, because there is
a growing belief in India that it can do business with the
GOP, a sentiment that was pretty clear during the recent
presidential elections.
US deputy chief of mission Robert O Blake said that the US was sending
several senators to India to boost economic cooperation with India. In
simple terms, Blake wants these Senators to grease the skids for
another increase in the H-1B visa cap and to do whatever they can to
continue the outsourcing of jobs to India. Blake hinted that job
giveaways will include fields like accounting, software, engineering
and law.
While the travel list of Senators isn't complete a significant
contingent of them will be from the "Friends of India" Senate caucus.
You can count on them to posture in front of cameras with the battered
people of Sri Lanka but it's what they do behind closed doors that
should worry U.S. workers. Deals will be brokered to accelerate the
flood of jobs out of the United States. If you are new to this
newsletter you can read more about these modern-day Benedict Arnolds by

So far the "Friends of India" that confirmed they will visit India
include:
Bill Frist (R-TN)
Jon Corzine (D-NY)
Norm Coleman (R-MN)

US Senators to visit India in droves

NEW DELHI: A significant portion of the US Congress will visit India in
the next week. The US Senate majority leader Bill Frist will lead a
group of Senate Republican heavyweights in their first visit to India.
Frist will be accompanied by Mitch Mc Connell, Norm Coleman and Mike
DeWine, three senior senators. Hot on their heels will be a delegation
of Congressmen led by James Leach, a group that, according to officials
is growing daily.
The visit of Frist and his colleagues is interesting because it gives
India an opportunity to showcase itself to the important legislative
arm of the US government. This is particularly important given that in
recent legislation, after the 9/11 recommendations, the sense of the
Congress resolutions have been regarded in India with particular
disfavour.
The return of the Republicans in the Congress is also an opportunity
for India to bond with them, because there is a growing belief in India
that it can do business with the GOP, a sentiment that was pretty clear
during the recent presidential elections.
Frist and his delegation will also be touring other tsunami-affected
regions.
Frist was one of the first to say that the US could afford to give much
more for disaster relief. "We can afford it, as an American and as a
reflection of the oneness of humanity around the world," Frist said. It
is expected that the Congressional delegations will meet the Indian
leadership. Senator Jon Corzine and Representatives Frank Pallone and
Chris Smith will also come.

NEW DELHI: The US has said outsourcing to India was "unavoidable" as
the latter had earned its place as the world's knowledge capital in the
BPO sector and that it was actively considering increasing the H1B
visas for Indian workers.
"Several appeals were made by the US citizens to put a stop to
outsourcing to India but were outright rejected as the US felt that
outsourcing to India, the knowledge capital of the world in BPO sector,
was unavoidable," an Assocham statement said here, quoting US deputy
chief of mission Robert O Blake.
Speaking at an interactive session organised by the industry body, he
said the US was now thinking about increasing the number of H1B visas
to Indian professionals.
"This decision is based on the fact that the US recognises India's
contribution in the fields like accounts, software, engineering and
law," he said.
Inviting closer cooperation between the small and medium sized
companies of the US and India, he said, "Such technological
advancements will be of great use to Indian small scale sector."
He said the fact that the US was sending several senators to India next
week proves that the country was serious in boosting economic
cooperation with India.
"This will give India an opportunity to showcase itself to an important
legislative arm of the US government," he said.
India's imports from the US stood at $5 billion in 2003 while the
exports to the US were valued at over $13 billion, it added.

US senators want to help Indian tsunami victims
Jan. 2, 2005
India may be averse to the idea of foreign help in dealing with the
tsunami disaster, but a small group of US lawmakers, led by Senate
Majority Leader Bill Frist, plans to visit the country later this week.
Frist, a physician and a member of the "Friends of India" in the
Senate, said in an e-mail to his friends and supporters: "This week I
am going to India to try to help...It's like 9/11 but so
different...There is a moral imperative for us to act quickly." "The
magnitude of this human tragedy may well define us in the years to
come. The world has seen in recent years how tough the US can be. Now
they must see how magnanimous and caring we are as a nation," said
Frist, who pledged the Senate's full support to the disaster victims.
The bipartisan group, which will also include Senator Norm Coleman,
plans to visit Sri Lanka and India, beginning January 6. Details of the
composition of the group and itinerary are still being finalised.
Coleman said it was important for American lawmakers to visit the
region to find ways for the US to help with disaster relief. The travel
plan is part of a series of moves aimed at erasing the impression that
the US was slow and weak in its initial response to the tragedy.
President George W Bush has already raised the US aid 10-fold to $ 350
million and despatched secretary of state Colin Powell and brother Jeb
Bush to the region.
