Remember Rep. Anthony Weiner (D, NY)?
In case you don't, he thinks there is a shortage of beautiful fashion models
in the United States. Weiner hopes to fix the problem by giving about 1,000 P
visas to foxy foreign ladies every year so that they can come to our country
to strut their stuff in front of adoring audiences.
OK, now let me tell you the downside of the bill: it would free up about an
equal number of H-1B visas that could be used to import more programmers and
engineers. Some of us, however, consider that a worthwhile sacrifice (LOL!).

Weiner Bill To Import Hot Looking Foreign Babes

Weiner is running against Bloomberg for mayor of New York, so he needs all the
money and luck he can get. So far he is running behind in the polls despite
his enthusiasm for importing more fashion models.
It appears that Weiner is attracting a lot of fans in the modeling business,
at least judging by the growing number of contributions he is getting from
modeling agencies. Cory Bautista of NY Models blew him a kiss for $1,500!
So far Weiner's bill hasn't picked up any co-sponsors so it's unlikely the
bill is going to get the thumbs up from Congress. Without the Weiner bill
gorgeous foreign fashion models are going to have to compete with engineers
for H-1B visas. Of course if they are extra special beautiful, and they can
sing, they might be able to use "O" visas. To read how that's done, go

MODELING $$ BOOST FOR WEINER
By DAVID SEIFMAN
July 18, 2008 --
Rep. Anthony Weiner, a mayoral candidate pushing a bill that would make it
easier for foreign models to enter the United States, has collected more
than $7,000 in campaign contributions from the modeling industry, records
show.
Weiner's campaign filing, made available yesterday, shows he collected at
least $7,125 from 14 individuals associated with the modeling business
between Jan. 12 and July 11.
The largest single contribution was $1,500 from Cory Bautista of NY Models
in Los Angeles.
Weiner made headlines last month when it was reported he's sponsoring a
bill in Congress that would open up to 1,000 more hard-to-get H-1B visas
for models. Most such permits now go to doctors, computer geeks and other
highly skilled professionals.
Weiner (D-Queens/Brooklyn) argued that New York is the fashion capital of
the nation and that the industry here needs to be competitive with rival
cities around the world.
He is leading the Democratic pack in fund-raising, having hauled in $1.4
million in the last six months - more than double what either Council
Speaker Christine Quinn or City Comptroller Bill Thompson has collected.
"The $7,000 he took from the modeling industry doesn't even represent 1
percent of his contributions," said a Weiner ally.

New immigration controversy: Foreign models may flood U.S.!
Around 1,000 additional tech workers may get visas to work in the United
States next year, and they may have fashion models to thank. That's because
foreign-born models and programmers will no longer have to duke it out for
the same visa slots if a New York congressman gets his way.
Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., has introduced a bill in the House that would
create a new, nonimmigrant classification reserved exclusively for the
catwalkers. Currently, foreign models who want to work in the United States
require H-1B visas, which are normally used by computer programmers and
other high-tech workers.
Weiner wants Congress to amend current visa rules to allow 1,000 foreign
models into the United States each year under their own immigrant
classification.
How long until the AFL-CIO objects to this to help its longstanding push to
form a union of U.S.-born fashion models?
We must not recklessly imperil high-paying American jobs. Will these
foreign models work for cheap? I'm all for competition. But we must have a
level catwalk.
